Under the general guidance of the Dean, College of Science,
Engineering and Technology, the Department Chair will be
responsible for the administrative and academic functions of the
Department of Chemistry. The Department Chair teaches at the
undergraduate and/or graduate levels, leads the faculty in
continued curricular development, engages in and promote active
research and leads initiatives to build the academic program and to
secure necessary funding and accreditations. Essential Duties
Summary:
- Assumes responsibility for the administrative and academic
functions of the department, manages course assignments and
enrollment, oversees departmental budget, and conducts student
advising.
- Teaches at the undergraduate and/or the graduate levels.
- Leads the faculty in continued curricula development.
- Engages in and promotes active research, and technology
development. Promotes industrial partnerships or
collaborations.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the dean of the College of
Science, Engineering and Technology.
- Assumes responsibility for the management and maintenance of
all departmental records, and preparation of reports in accordance
with College procedures.
- Obtains and/or manages existing extracurricular grants and
contracts either independently or in collaboration with
departmental faculty. % FTE: 1.0 Hiring Range: $90,059.95 -
$123,833.00 Education: An earned doctorate in Chemistry is
required. Required Licensing/Certification: N/A Knowledge, Skills,
and Abilities: Knowledge of:
- Applicants should be dynamic individuals with demonstrated
leadership ability who can lead the faculty in continued curricular
development, excellence in teaching, and scholarly activity, and
growth in funded research. Applicants must have demonstrable
commitment to undergraduate and graduate education as well as
proven record of scholarly achievement in a field of
Chemistry.
- Tasks are multiple and diverse with some interrelationship
across processes. Handles some unrelated functions. Work requires
the direct application of a variety of procedures, policies and/or
precedents. Some responsibility for budget and expenditure
authority.
- Develops objectives and general policies and procedures for a
specific program or functional area of responsibility within
general scope of established operational goals and plans.
Day-to-day work and decisions do not require direction or review by
immediate supervisor. Frequently solves complex problems. End
results are reviewed by supervisor. Strategic issues are referred
to supervisor.
- Regular contact with others, including students, general
public, and University personnel. Purpose of contacts is to
explain, clarify or interpret information. May handle confidential
information and some complex matters.
- Anticipates customer needs and regularly motivates or
influences others to deliver customer service excellence. May
troubleshoot highly sensitive or confidential issues. Personally,
ensures problem resolution. Identifies barriers to effective
customer service and sets customer service standards. Establishes a
customer feedback system and holds self-accountable for customer
service excellence within the department or program.
Skill in:Successful candidates should have a distinguished record
of successful program administration in an academic setting and a
reputation for teaching, research, and intellectual leadership.
Ability to:Assists the dean in supervising and directing the work
activities of staff in department, functional area, or program.
Supervises faculty and staff and provides overall direction and
expectations for the department, functional area, or program. Has
human resources responsibilities and authority for faculty and
staff. This position typically reports to the Dean. Work
Experience: There must be ample evidence of a successful
professional career in Chemistry. The successful applicant must be
qualified to be appointed with tenure at the rank of professor or
above in the Department of Chemistry. Working/Environmental
Conditions:
- Prolonged standing and/or walking.
- Handling light weight objects.
